Background of the Study

Occupational asthma is a respiratory condition triggered or aggravated by exposure to allergens or irritants in the workplace. It is one of the most common work-related respiratory diseases globally, with healthcare workers being particularly vulnerable due to frequent exposure to disinfectants, latex, chemicals, and other irritants. Nurses, in particular, are at high risk for occupational asthma due to their regular contact with hospital cleaning agents, medications, and other environmental pollutants. As such, nurses' awareness of the condition and their ability to implement preventive measures is crucial in reducing the risk of developing occupational asthma.

Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, located in southern Nigeria, serves as both a training and service institution, and as such, nurses working in various hospital units are often exposed to various potential asthma triggers. However, there is limited research on the awareness of occupational asthma among nurses at this facility. This study seeks to appraise the level of awareness and the preventive measures adopted by nurses to mitigate occupational asthma at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. By evaluating their knowledge and practices, the study aims to provide recommendations for improving workplace safety and ensuring the long-term health of nursing staff.

Statement of the Problem

Despite growing awareness of occupational asthma globally, there appears to be a lack of sufficient attention to the issue among nurses in Nigerian hospitals, including at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. Limited knowledge of the risk factors and preventive strategies may lead to increased incidences of asthma-related illnesses, reduced work performance, and long-term health problems for nurses. This study, therefore, aims to assess the awareness of occupational asthma among nurses at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital and evaluate the preventive measures in place to protect staff.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of awareness of occupational asthma among nurses at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.
  2. To evaluate the preventive measures adopted by nurses to protect themselves from occupational asthma.
  3. To identify the challenges nurses face in preventing occupational asthma and provide recommendations for improvement.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of awareness of occupational asthma among nurses at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital?
  2. What preventive measures are nurses at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital adopting to protect themselves from occupational asthma?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in preventing occupational asthma, and how can these challenges be addressed?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital have adequate awareness of occupational asthma and its prevention.
  2. There is a significant relationship between nurses' awareness of occupational asthma and the preventive measures they adopt.
  3. Barriers such as insufficient training and inadequate protective equipment hinder the effective prevention of occupational asthma among nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in various departments of Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, including emergency, pediatric, and general medical units. A limitation of this study is that it will not cover nurses in other healthcare facilities, limiting the ability to generalize findings beyond this hospital.

Definition of Terms

  • Occupational Asthma: A respiratory condition triggered or worsened by inhaling airborne allergens or irritants in the workplace.
  • Awareness: The knowledge and understanding nurses have about occupational asthma and its causes.
  • Preventive Measures: Strategies and actions taken by nurses to reduce the risk of developing occupational asthma, including proper use of protective equipment and environmental controls.
